Train station - Mechelen

design review of walkable glass skylights

The train station in Mechelen received a significant face lift. Among the works is a brand new underground parking facility with skylights to allow natural light entry. The skylight build-up is modular with glass panels on a wooden support structure. As these skylights are situated in walkable ground zone, they need to be realised accounting for people standing and walking upon them.

vitroplena was assigned to check the skylights for safety and conformity with the building codes, and to design an economically optimized glass package. As we were able to come up with a reduction in glass thickness of almost 50% we presume this mission as accomplished!

If you happen to be near the station of Mechelen, feel free to take a look down into the parking facility from the skylight.
